Village savings and loan associations supported by ISSED have reached the end of their savings cycle, returning accumulated savings and interest to members.
The share-out typically lands before the agricultural season begins — which is precisely the point. It puts capital in members’ hands at the moment inputs need to be bought, rather than at the moment a lender would prefer to collect.
Locally owned credit
VSLAs matter disproportionately in ISSED’s financial literacy work because they are locally owned and locally governed. They continue operating long after a project cycle ends, and they create access to credit on terms members set themselves.
